Santa Fe Public Spaces Tree Inventory
Santa Fe Public Spaces Tree Inventory
Project Description
The Santa Fe Public Spaces Tree Inventory Project, or tree inventory project, is a great way to learn how to identify tree species, assess the health of trees, correctly plant trees, and understand how climate change is influencing tree selection in Santa Fe. Volunteering with the tree inventory project is a great way to apply your master gardener skills.
The tree inventory project works with the City of Santa Fe Municipal Tree Board to inventory city trees. As a result of the project, all planted trees in city parks have been inventoried, providing location, type, and condition information. You can view an interactive city parks tree inventory map here.
Starting in 2025, the tree inventory project will begin inventorying trees in Santa Fe’s Downtown and Eastside Historic District. Master gardeners and interns can log in to SignUp Genius to participate in the inventory work sessions. Volunteers can email sfemg1@gmail.com.
Project Goals
The project is building a precise and reliable public tree inventory that can be used to forecast city maintenance programs and help residents identify the right tree for the right place in public and private gardens.
Tree Inventory Sessions
The tree inventory uses geographic information system (GIS) mapping tools to collect:
· Location,
· Species,
· Diameter,
· Condition,
· Pest affliction, and
· Maintenance needs.
Inventory sessions are an opportunity to learn tree identification and condition assessment skills from master gardeners and arborists. Click here to sign up for an inventory session. The project also hosts data collection workshops available to master gardeners, interns, and public volunteers. It’s a true citizen science effort.
